A system that notifies the arrival time and seismic intensity immediately after an earthquake occurs (before the shaking arrives!).

The emergency earthquake alert system is designed to quickly inform people of the estimated arrival time and intensity of seismic waves based on observational data captured by seismometers near the epicenter immediately after an earthquake occurs. Earthquakes are preceded by small tremors known as P-waves, followed by larger tremors called S-waves. The emergency earthquake alert system detects these P-waves, predicts the magnitude and epicenter of the earthquake, and issues an alert a few seconds to tens of seconds before the larger S-waves arrive. The Japan Meteorological Agency issues alerts when an intensity of 5- or higher is predicted. However, there are cases where information may not reach those close to the epicenter in time, and there are technical limitations that can result in an error of about plus or minus one in the predicted intensity.
